Soothe Facial Balm
$28.00 1 oz tin · Face balm + eye makeup remover
Feed your face. Your skin makes its own oil every day. Soothe Tallow is built from the same kinds of fats, plus a plant butter, a wax, and two oils that give skin more of what it likes.
At night it melts off makeup. In the morning it keeps your face soft, under foundation or under a beard.
- Melts off makeup, mascara and eyeliner included.
- No water, so no preservatives. Five ingredients, and each one earns its spot.
- A little goes a long way. Press on a thin layer; it settles in within minutes.

How many tins?
The surprising part: there’s no water in it.
Dry skin needs water, not just oil, and Soothe Tallow can’t add any. What it can do is keep water in. Think of a pot of soup: the lid doesn’t add soup, it stops it steaming away. Soothe Tallow is the lid, so put it on damp skin, right after you wash.
- WaterYour skin is damp from washing. Pat it, but leave it a little damp.
- GlycerinSoothe Soap leaves some behind after you rinse, holding that water close.
- TallowFeeds your skin and adds a soft layer on top that slows water from drifting off.
Water, a magnet to hold it, and a lid to keep it. That’s why we built these two to be used together: Soothe Soap, then Soothe Tallow on damp skin.

Five ingredients. Here’s why each one is there.
Each one does something for your skin, and something for the balm itself.
Three simple steps.
No makeup? Skip straight to steps 2 and 3.
Melt and wipe
At night, warm a pea-sized amount and rub it gently over closed lids and lashes for 20 to 30 seconds. Wipe it away with a warm, damp washcloth.
Wash, leave it damp
Wash with Soothe Soap and rinse. Pat your face, but leave it a little damp.
Seal
Press a small amount onto damp skin, morning and night. Wearing makeup? Give it a few minutes first; it makes a smooth base.

Tallow is beef fat that’s been gently melted and strained until it’s clean and smooth. People have used it on their skin for a very long time.
Because Soothe Tallow has no water in it, so on its own it can’t add any. What it can do is keep water in. Think of a pot of soup. The lid doesn’t add soup; it stops the soup from steaming away. Soothe Tallow is the lid, so the trick is to put the lid on while there’s still soup in the pot: on damp skin, right after you wash. Wash with Soothe Soap and you add a third layer. Soap-making creates glycerin on its own, and Soothe Soap keeps it in the bar. Glycerin is a water magnet (scientists call it a humectant), and a little stays on your skin after you rinse. Water, a magnet to hold it, and a lid to keep it.
Every face is different, so we won’t promise that nothing ever will. Here’s what we did on purpose: we left out coconut oil, and we kept the recipe to five ingredients so you always know what’s touching your skin. Start with a thin layer on damp skin. If you tend to break out, try it on one small spot for a few days first.
No. Clean, well-rendered tallow has very little smell of its own. What you’ll notice is the sweet birch, which smells fresh, like a light, clean mint.
Yes, on the outside. That’s one of the jobs it was made for. Close your eyes and use it on your lids and lashes, never in the eyes themselves. Like anything with a fresh, cool scent, the birch oil can sting if it gets into your eyes. If that happens, rinse with warm water. If irritation doesn’t go away, stop using it.
Usually, with a little extra time. Let the balm sit for 30 to 60 seconds before you wipe. You may need a second pass.
Absolutely. Skin works the same way on every face. After shaving: rinse, pat almost dry, and press on a thin layer. Avoid any nicks or cuts. Under a beard: the skin under a beard gets dry, tight, and flaky too. Warm a small amount in your palms, work it through your beard, and reach down to the skin. It softens your beard on the way. Start small so it doesn’t feel greasy, and add more only if you need it.
Probably using too much. A little goes a long way. Use less than you think you need, and press it on instead of rubbing. A thin layer on damp skin settles in within a few minutes.
Lotions are mostly water, and water evaporates fast. A balm skips the water and does the part water can’t do on its own: keeping it in. You bring the water by applying to damp skin, and the balm keeps it there.
Mold and bacteria need water to grow. Soothe Tallow has none, so it doesn’t need the preservatives that water-based products rely on. Your part is keeping water out of the tin, so always use clean, dry fingers.
That’s the beeswax doing its job. A firm balm travels better and holds up in warm weather. Swipe once, warm it between your fingers for a few seconds, and it turns soft and silky. We don’t whip it, because whipped balms lose their fluffy texture as soon as they get warm in shipping.
Yes. Heat can soften a balm on the way to you; leave it at room temperature and it will firm back up. Shea butter can form tiny grains when it melts and cools slowly. Those grains melt right away on your skin. It’s only a change in texture, not a problem with the balm.
They’re from the same family, built for two very different kinds of skin. Your hands, feet, and body have relatively few oil glands, and your palms and soles have almost none. That skin can’t replace much of the oil that washing and hard work strip away, so it needs a balm that brings its own. That’s Soothe Salve: beeswax, olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, and wild-harvested birch oil, made to restore skin that gets worked hard all day. Your face is the opposite. It has many times more oil glands than the rest of your body, and the skin is thinner, thinnest of all around your eyes. It doesn’t need a heavy layer. It needs fats that match the oil it already makes. That oil, called sebum, is built from many of the same fatty acids as tallow, and about a quarter of it is wax, the same kind that makes up beeswax. So Soothe Tallow swaps the salve’s olive and coconut oils for tallow, leaves coconut oil out entirely (many people find it too heavy for their faces), and adds castor oil, which glides over delicate skin and lifts makeup so it wipes away. Some customers do use the salve on their faces, and it’s the same family of ingredients, so it’s a reasonable stand-in if it’s what you have on hand. But it wasn’t designed for your face, and it won’t take off makeup. Tallow was built for both. Salve restores hard-working skin. Tallow feeds your face. One job each.
No. Soothe Tallow works on any clean, damp skin. Soothe Soap adds the glycerin step, and that’s why the two work best together.
Used morning and night, a 1 oz tin lasts about two months, which is why Autoship defaults to every 2 months. Keep the lid on, and keep it away from heat and direct sun. Store it out of reach of small children.
